If life went according to plan

I would have arrived in Croatia (a week ago, to be exact)
  instead I'm living in Iowa
waiting for hubby to reunite with Beli and I.

We won't be returning to Croatia (as of now)
We have reached a crossroad
and a decision must be made
what is in the best interest for our family?
The three of us?
Hubby and I have our families oceans apart
Recession is now a personal enemy
We knew the time would come
when we
would be faced with this decision
it's not easy.
but then again, change is never easy.
I will keep you posted.
There was no easy way to write this, I had many different scenarios played in my mind
of how I would explain that we wouldn't be returning to Croatia. I told all my friends in Croatia goodbye before I departed, it was bitter-sweet. I told my parents on Christmas Day, it was their present!

(P.S. I'm blessed that our family is healthy,
.. now if only we could find work)

  2. Elisa! Oh, my heart stopped! I have been thinking that you have gone back, but then the recent posts seem to be written in the U.S., so now that explains. That is a big life decision. What a surprise for your readers! I hope your family members back in Croatia are not too sad about your absence there. What a nice Christmas gift for your parents, though! I imagine because of the move, your and your family's future is shifting towards a different directions now. I am thinking of you in the transition and I hope your husband can come see you and Beli and all of you will be reunited soon. Good luck with job search. I hope things will go well for you and your beautiful family. I look forward to hearing about your updates.

  3. Congratulations on Beli's week without wearing a diaper! My second one had accidents two days in a row. Oh well. It happens. At least it was on a marble floor where I can wipe.

  7. WOW! You know, I must admit, I wondered about this when you first were speaking of your trip to Iowa without hubby. The economy "IS" tough, isn't it! I'll be sending good thoughts for you to find work soon, and for your family to be reunited and happy...wherever that ends up being. If it's not Croatia, still...think of all the wonderful friends and memories you've made!! Frankly, Beli will thrive and be loved wherever she is! :-)

  9. @Charlene, thank you, it means alot.

@Kaho, remember that email I meant to write to you,? it was to ask you about how you cope with your families being so far away. I sort of had to keep quiet until my family found out, they were thrilled, but also saddened for my in-laws. It will all work out. will keep you posted.

ps. Beli went two days with accidents, then each additional day they were less and less frequent, but she hasn't asked for diapers so that's a good sign!

  14. Don't worry yourself about the olive oil...I have lots and don't want you to waste any more time even thinking about it. Please make sure that your husband spends whatever time he has in Croatia visiting his family and friends. If he find he has time left to even think about the olive oil, he should instead go out and have one more plate of palacinke ;-) Seriously.

  33. I'm sorry I didn't get that email... It wasn't easy for me to be far away from my family at the beginning, but I was in the States and I was happy living in the States with my hubby. There are so many things I love about America: the people, shopping, education, entertainment, everything! Those definitely helped me not miss my family so much. I made great friends who were the source of my energy. I think the key to me is to have friends who make you feel like they are your families and keep yourself busy.

I loved living in Texas, but after we moved to Washington, D.C., things were easier because it was the third/neutral place for us. For us, being in a third city or a country seems to make things easier in our relationship. I miss my family, but now we have kids, I miss my family for my girls than for myself.

Also there are more Japanese people and Japanese goods, restaurants, etc. available in DC area. Access to your own culture, people and food is one factor that keeps one happy being away from home.

Knowing how close you feel towards your family and it sounded like your husband's family was very tight, it must have been tough for you to see your husband having a close relationship with his own family while you lived too far to do the same for your own family in the U.S.

It's a tough issue for international marriages. :)

I wish you the very best! Please continue with your blog even though you're no longer in Croatia.

    P.S. Go Beli!

  35. @tania, both hubby and I are very close to our family, which makes our decision, that more difficult, but I'm sure it will all work out.

@Diana , I could give you a hug right now!

@Pamela, thanks for understanding, yes jobs are hard to come by.I'm saddened that you found my blog only to read I'm leaving Croatia. I hope you stick around to reading more. I'm sure I will continue blogging, not sure how I will go about the title, etc.. but I will figure something out.
